A heat pump moves heat from one place to another using refrigerant and compressors. In winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air (even cold air contains heat energy) and pumps it indoors. In summer, it reverses the process to cool your home. Unlike furnaces that generate heat by burning gas, heat pumps are highly efficient because they simply move existing heat rather than creating it.
