How does a steam humidifier work?
The Aprilaire 800 generates steam by running electrical current between two electrodes submerged in water inside a canister. The current heats the water to boiling, creating pure steam. This steam travels through a hose to a dispersion tube in your supply duct. The process is automatic — the digital control triggers steam generation only when humidity is needed.
What electrical requirements does it need?
The 800 requires a dedicated electrical circuit — 120V (11.5A, 1.4kW), 208V (11.5A, 2.4kW), or 240V (11.5A, 2.8kW). Higher voltage means higher steam output. Your electrician will determine the right option during installation. A water supply line and drain are also required.
How often does the canister need replacement?
Once per humidifier season under normal conditions. The unit automatically monitors water conductivity and drains as needed to manage mineral buildup. When the canister reaches end-of-life, the control panel displays a replacement indicator. Canister replacement is a simple swap — pull out the old one, drop in the new one.
Is the 800 louder than a bypass humidifier?
You may hear a gentle bubbling sound when the unit is actively generating steam — similar to a kettle on low. It's mounted on the ductwork in your mechanical room, so it's not noticeable from living areas. Bypass humidifiers are silent because they have no moving parts; the 800 trades that silence for dramatically higher output and versatility.
Can it work with a boiler or radiant heat?
Absolutely — this is one of the 800's biggest advantages. Bypass and fan-powered humidifiers need hot moving air from a furnace. The 800 generates its own steam, so it works with boilers, radiant floor heat, heat pumps, and even homes without forced air. The only requirement is ductwork for steam distribution.
What humidity level should I set?
The ideal range is 35–45% relative humidity in winter. The automatic digital control adjusts based on outdoor temperature — when it's very cold outside, it lowers the target slightly to prevent condensation on windows. Most GTA homeowners set the target around 40% and let the automatic control handle the rest.
